IPS 5500 Customers Protected against New Microsoft Vulnerabilities

Westboro, MA, June 16, 2005 -

Top Layer Networks, the global leader for high performance intrusion prevention solutions, today advised customers that its Attack Mitigator™ IPS 5500 intrusion prevention system already provides out-of-the-box protection for the most dangerous of the three critical vulnerabilities disclosed on June 14th by Microsoft in their vulnerability advisory.  The most critical vulnerability, MS05-027, an SMB implementation vulnerability, is automatically protected by Top Layer’s recommended firewall setup.  All versions of the IPS 5500 already contained the proper protection mechanisms to stop these exploits.

Microsoft’s SMB service contains the buffer overflow vulnerability that can be used to carry out remote code execution.  Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could be used to gain access to internal networks and machines with out authorization.  With this attack, no authentication is needed for an attacker to leverage these vulnerabilities to compromise resources such as sub-networks and connected machines.

Peter Rendall, President and CEO of Top Layer Networks said, “Top Layer Networks is committed to continually and proactively protecting our customers’ infrastructure against evolving threats.  Because our protection is driven by our powerful inline inspection technologies, and not on signatures that are sent out to customers after vulnerabilities are announced and being exploited by criminals, we believe our approach provides the best protection for our customers.  Our customers can be confident and secure in the knowledge that the network and application level protection they have in place today is the most advanced in the industry, and they are protected against existing and emerging threats.”

Mike Paquette, Top Layer’s VP technology stated, “Because the testing and deploying of patches is a constant battle, our customers rely on our intrusion prevention technology and TopResponse team to provide the required protection before the world knows about a vulnerability.   With numerous vulnerabilities still waiting to be found, customers know that a preemptive approach can prevent catastrophic attacks that can endanger their operations.”
