Top Layer Intrusion Prevention Solution Secures the Javits Center Network during the 2005 Infosecurity Conference

Westboro, MA, December 05, 2005 -

Top Layer Networks, the global leader for high performance intrusion prevention solutions, today announced that its Top Layer IPS family of products will be protecting the network of the Javits Center during the Infosecurity Conference, held Dec. 6-8, 2005.  One of the nation’s most well known convention and expo centers, Javits has been a Top Layer customer since 2004.

“When hosting a conference that boasts the world’s foremost security experts as attendees, providing superior network protection is of the utmost priority, we know all eyes are on us,” said Lou Martorella, network manager at the Javits Center.  “Top Layer’s IPS gives us a network security blanket, enabling us to track malicious traffic at its source and drop malicious packets in real time, ensuring that Infosecurity staff, exhibitors and attendees will have connectivity during the entire show.”

The Javits Center relies on providing unimpeded access to the Internet for its millions of annual guests.  The Javits network team never knows what types of devices will be connected to their network, and has no management control over the end devices.  They experienced regular outages – sometimes several per day – when exhibitors connected infected machines to the network and clogged it or brought it down entirely.  Because the applications and ports that are in use vary by event, by exhibitor, by day, and even by device, it was unrealistic to firewall the network.  Yet with thousands of devices and users - and gigabits of daily traffic - Javits needed a solution that kept the network as flexible and unrestricted as possible and that also would quickly defeat attacks before they proliferated and brought the entire network down.  It was also imperative that the solution not degrade their network’s performance.

Javits selected Top Layer’s IPS, an active intrusion prevention solution that has worked flawlessly within one of the most fluid networks imaginable.  Top Layer’s IPS unit went beyond attack protection and incorporated features to ensure the IPS unit itself would not be a point of failure, such as redundant power supplies and fail-open capabilities.  Javits’ show floor network went from up to four outages per day to not a single outage since installation.

“Securing an entire trade show floor with thousands of remote devices connected to the network is an extremely daunting task.  When outages occur during one of the most respected security conferences in the world, people tend to notice,” said Mike Paquette, VP of technology at Top Layer Networks.  “We’re very happy to help Javits prevent costly network downtime and provide all of its conference exhibitors and attendees with non-stop connectivity, while protecting Javits’ critical infrastructure.”
